Midwestern boy Frankie finds a .38 caliber automatic pistol and impresses Bonnie so much she takes him back to Kansas City with her to learn from Big Ed and his two sons. Frankie get impatient, kills all 3 of them, and goes on a crime spree with Bonnie. He earns the sobriquet "Gunner".

Winthrop Peters, Jr. relies on his unseen companion Charlie, but when Winthrop's uncle and aunt make plans for private school, Charlie has other ideas.
